Course Description:
Surveys Latin American history focusing on the development of political and social structures since the independence movements of the 19th century. Emphasizes Latin phenomenon as caudillismo, indigenismo, the Church and liberation theology, and the revolutionary movements in the 20th century. (Offered every fourth semester.)
Reflective Narrative:
History and Politics of Latin America was a very enjoyable class that procedurally went through most of the countries in Latin America, and taught about their histories. Through presentations, films, and an extrodinarily dry but informative textbook, I went from knowing nothing about Latin America to having quite a lot of knowledge about it, fulfilling MLO 3. My opinions on US policy, oil, revolution, the enlightenment, and human nature were all changed by this class, (mostly for the negative) but I am glad for this. This was one of the first non-Japanese courses I had taken in quite some time, and the ability to work in English made this class almost feel like a vacation. Even so, I worked very hard in this class and am proud of what I accomplished in it.
