MLO 3: Secondary Culture
3.1. Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with second culture.
3.2. Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture.
Courses Taken:
Span 309: History & Politics of Latin America
Reflective Narrative:
This course taught me about the history of Latin America. Although I knew a lot about Mexican culture from living on the Central Coast, as well as studying Spanish in high school, this class gave me the context through which to view that culture, not to mention the culture and history of the many other countries in Latin America, fulfilling MLO 3.2. When studying Peru, I learned that one of its former presidents was a Japanese national. Learning about this man and the circumstances for his position in Peru allowed me to fulfill MLO 3.1. We discussed the various types of governments and economic systems in place in Latin America, as well as why each individual system either succeeded or failed. Common themes were Systemic Inequality, Conservatism vs. Liberalism, the Church, America's influence, Single Export Economies, and Revolution.
